9th AMS Conference at Nagoya University Center for Chronological Research

Nagoya, Japan
September, 9-13, 2002

General

Following the AMS-9 ballot conducted by Prof. Walter Kutschera and his colleagues of the Vienna AMS group, we, Japanese AMS groups, are selected to organize the AMS-9. We are honored to host the AMS-9 and would like to do our best to make it a fruitful and enjoyable conference.

Participants to AMS conferences are increasing rapidly and the number was more than 300 at the AMS-8 in 1999. This suggests that technical developments are running faster and applications in various fields are becoming more and more important. We may expect more than 300 attendees to the AMS-9.

Japanese participation into AMS studies is not late. Both tandem facilities of the University of Tokyo and Kyoto University started their research on AMS in 1980. The studies were aimed to detect 3H, 10Be, 14C. Finally, routine 10Be measurements were started at the University of Tokyo in 1982. In addition, a GIC Tandetron was installed at Nagoya University in 1981-1982, and routine 14C dating was started in 1983. As the result of the 20-year-long history, more and more members in AMS application researches are enjoying wonderful fruits of AMS technology and eight AMS facilities are running their own ways in Japan.

It may needless to mention that Chinese AMS groups have marked a great success in the chronological research of their archeological properties. A new AMS facility with a HVEE Tandetron accelerator has been established for 14C dating applications at Seoul National University, Korea.

Eight previous AMS conferences were held in USA, Switzerland, Canada, France, Australia, and the latest one in Austria. No AMS conference has been hosted in Asia before, so it is a good opportunity for the East Asian AMS teams to present achievements in their home ground. We, the Japanese AMS research groups, are honored to host the AMS-9 in Japan.

Objective

The purpose of the Conference is to assess, exchange and share our most recent development of AMS techniques, both AMS machines and the preparation of samples, as well as new findings in a variety of application fields. To achieve this objective, in addition to the main Conference that will cover all kinds of subject, pre- and post-conference workshops will be organized, in which several topics will be discussed in detail. Some of the workshops can possibly be hosted by AMS groups in China and Korea.

Dates and Locations

The Conference will be held for 5 days from September 9 to 13 (Monday to Friday) in 2002. The main venue for the Conference is Nagoya University locating eastern rim of Nagoya City, about 450 km west from Tokyo, almost 2 hours by the bullet train (shinkansen), and about 200 km east from Kyoto, less than one hour by the bullet train.

The possible satellite venues for workshops and laboratory tours are Kyoto University, Tono Geoscience Center, University of Tokyo, and National Institute for Environmental Studies.
